The aim of Doc-Career was to facilitate networking between early career researchers and/or doctoral researchers nearing their submission date, and representatives from industry. Every year nearly 600 researchers complete doctorates in the Francophone universities in Belgium.
After they graduate, many researchers move into careers in the public or private sectors. Their transition from academia into industry deserves special attention.
Programmes have been developed to explore and promote the valuable skills acquired by doctoral researchers. One of these, the Doc-Career event, consisted of two days spent highlighting the professional benefits of doctoral research.

Doc-career had three aims:

  • To raise awareness amongst PhD researchers and early career researchers of how to take advantage of their transferrable skills in order to develop careers outside of academia;
  • To encourage PhD holders to explore the variety of different career options open to them;
  • To discover of the needs of the industrial sector.

These training days were part of a series of activities delivered by Focus Research in collaboration with the Belgian branches of the Intelli’Agence network (formerly Association Bernard Gregory) aiming to increase access for early career researchers to the job market.
