As part of the Doctorat.be project, Focus Research organises an annual event called [email protected], in partnership with all of the Francophone universities in Belgium.

The theme and the venue change every year, but the event is always for targeted at PhD researchers, PhD holders and other researchers. Every year we choose a theme related to doctoral skills-development or employability.

In 2013, [email protected] took place the 29th and 30th of November in Gembloux. The aim was to inform doctoral researchers and other researchers about careers in innovation in the following three fields: entrepreneurship, consultancy, and R&D.

The event attracted 220 researchers, mainly doctoral researchers (80%), from a number of different Francophone universities. The academic disciplines were represented in different proportions: 53% from the hard sciences and medicine, 26% from the humanities, social sciences and architecture, and 21% from engineering and technology.

For more details, please see the report of the 2013 event.

In December 2014 we organised two two-day long sessions entitled: “How to develop your career plan in ‘serious game’ mode”. Twenty-four doctoral researchers attended these workshops. They were very useful and also fun and engaging, and the methodology helped participants not just to design realistic Career Plans, but actually to take away concrete, actionable steps for how to implement their plans. The details of the 2014 event are here

For the 2015 event, we are planning an Open Forum for all of the stakeholders in research (doctoral researchers, post-doctoral researchers, researchers in permanent positions, and administrative and technical staff). We will tackle the following theme together: “How can we, as a team, work more effectively together and collaborate better?".
