Who can help?

Career advisors in universities

The process of preparing for an academic career and the process of preparing for a career in industry are very different! If you want to pursue an academic career, your CV should include a list of your publications, which should be as long as possible. But if you want to pursue a career in industry, your CV should be only one or two pages long and should include a list of skills, such as knowlegde of a particular field, the ability to take initiative or to work independently.

The first step when you are seeking employment is to plot the range of options available to you, which you can do using our Decision Tree. You should then consult specialist websites related to your academic discipline (see Useful Links), or, with support, carry out a Skills Assessment and develop a Career Plan.

Career Advisors and other support services in universities can help you with your job search, either one-on-one or in a group setting. They can usually help with CVs, covering letters, and with preparation for interviews or assessment days.
